A group of fishermen in New Zealand got a big shock when a huge mako shark leaped out of the water and landed right on the front of the boat.

Ryan Churches, the owner of Churchys Charters NZ, shared video of the stunning moment.

Churches told Storyful that his customers were looking for kingfish when the mako shark took the bait. It wasn’t long after being hooked that the shark leaped out of the water. The crew immediately warned people not to go anywhere near him noting the shark “he’s not happy.”

After thrashing around a bit the shark lays still for a moment during which time Churches and the crew wondered what the heck they were going to do.

Thankfully, the shark managed to wriggle free all on its own. “He got away safe,” Churches later told The New Zealand Herald. “There’s nothing much we could do. We can’t go up the front to go near it because they go absolutely bonkers.” He added that they had “windscreens and hard-tops blocking it.”

Churches also told the newspaper that the customers were very thankful and “counting their blessings he didn’t land on the back of the boat.” He thought they were very lucky too. saying, “We were lucky it didn’t come into the back of the boat otherwise it could have a wildly different story.”
