Not everything that tastes good is bad for your health – though sometimes it may appear so. There are times when we need something sweet and end up adding some seasoning to improve the flavor those vegetables. What if we introduce you to sweetener whose benefits include helping one lose weight?
A recent study that was done to find out how agavins impact mice and the results have got quite some attention. Mice that took agavins had low blood sugar levels and lost weight compared to those who took water that was sweetened with fructose, glucose, aspartame or agave syrup.
Agavins are a form of sugar which is extracted from the agave plant. As indicated by the study, they are rich in dietary fiber and are non-digestible – which explains why they do not increase blood sugar levels. Since they are not associated with any side effects, they are preferred when compared to artificial sweeteners. Their only downside is that they are not sweet.
Once in the tequila, they are converted to ethanol – so you will never find them existing as agavins when you buy the drink. Since the report also showered that mice that took agavins ate less compared to the others, it is believed that they may function as appetite suppressants.
Another positive of this sweetener is that it can be helpful to people with type 2 diabetes. They produce a hormone know as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) – which leads to increased insulin production. They are also relatively cheap.
