The discovery occurred in a house in the town of Marawi during a cleaning operation. Soldiers in this house discovered 52 million Philippine pesos (the national currency of the Philippines) as well as 23.7 million in CHECKS!
According to CNN Philippines, the money was found in the house that was previously a weapons station left behind by a group called Maute. According to the international press, the house where the money was found is in the same house where a man from Maute was murdered for shooting a soldier.
Lieutenant General Carlito Galvez said: “The Navy is currently conducting a house-to-house clean-up, which is necessary because of the terrorists causing the ongoing conflict. Millions will be turned over to authorities.”
An attempt is currently being made to trace the origin of the funds and checks. Philippine troops are fighting this terrorist group, which first attacked the city on May 23. The group is believed to be protected by the “Emir” or leader of ISIS in the Philippines, Isnilon Hapilon, who is said to be in the Philippines. The president has declared martial law in the area.
